Where is Mount Nebo in Jordan?

Do you want to take a step back in time and relive the famous final moments of Moses, as he stood upon Mount Nebo gazing over the Jordanian Valley and the Promise Land before his death?

This ancient site holds secrets that have fascinated explorers and historians for centuries, so there is no doubt that visiting Mount Nebo during your Jordan trip, together with really immersing in the history and cultural significance of the sacred mountain will make your visit to the small Middle Eastern nation one to remember.

With not being very religious, in addition to the extensive archaeological wonders throughout the country, Mount Nebo wasn’t the first pick on my Jordan itinerary, however, it was part of the organised private tour that we had booked, and it certainly added a different dimension to our visit.

It is worth the trip just for the spectacular views of the Jordanian Valley, Jerusalem and the Dead Sea (on a clear day), from the 710 metres above sea vantage point - an ideal selfie spot!

This blog will have all the information you need from a practical standpoint to ensure your trip to Mount Nebo is a success and a worthy choice on your packed Jordan itinerary.

An introduction to the historical significance of Mount Nebo.

Mount Nebo, also known as Pisgah, has a rich and storied history that stretches back thousands of years, to biblical times. The immense religious and cultural significance is a result of the biblical accounts, that Mount Nebo is where Moses stood and gazed upon the Promised Land before his death. This pivotal moment in history marks the end of Moses' journey and the passing of the torch to the next generation. The significance of this event is captured in the Book of Deuteronomy, where Moses' final prophecy is recorded.

Archaeological evidence further supports the historical significance of Mount Nebo. Excavations on the mountain have unearthed ancient ruins, including a Byzantine church and monastery, which are believed to have been built to commemorate Moses' death. These discoveries offer a glimpse into the past and provide valuable insights into the religious practices and cultural traditions of the time. Exploring the ruins and landmarks on Mount Nebo is like stepping back in time and immersing oneself in the ancient world.

It is said that Moses is buried somewhere close to the holy site.

Mount Nebo bible verse : Deuteronomy 32:49,50

49 - Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession:

50 - And die in the mount whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people:

Directions to Mount Nebo.

Mount Nebo is easily accessible from all directions as it is on the main route from Amman towards the Dead Sea and Kings Highway, which is used to drive across to Petra, Wadi Rum and Aqaba City. The holy site is located approximately 10 kilometers west of the city of Madaba, so only takes around 10-15 minutes from here. From Madaba, it is a case of following Palestine Street which flows into Al-Quds Street and then onto Mount Nebo.

If you are travelling from Amman then it is around 45 minutes and approximately 35 kilometres. You take Road 35 to Madaba and then follow the above instructions. The same goes if you are heading North from the Kings Highway.

Public transport isn’t very good in this part of Jordan, so most tourists rent a car or take a private tour. The private tours usually cover multiple highlights and range from an afternoon up to one week. Most tour companies will pick up from anywhere in Amman, especially anywhere close to the main tourist spots.

View of Jerusalem from Mount Nebo in Jordan

The famous Mount Nebo viewpoint.

One of the highlights of visiting Mount Nebo is the panoramic view it offers. Standing at an elevation of around 800 meters, the mountain provides a breathtaking vista of the surrounding landscape. On a clear day, which we were lucky enough to have on our visit - you can see as far as the Dead Sea, Jerusalem, and even parts of the West Bank.

The view from Mount Nebo is not only visually stunning but also holds deep spiritual significance. It is believed to be the same view that Moses saw before his death, symbolising the fulfilment of God's promise to the Israelites. Standing at the edge of the mountain, gazing out at the vast expanse, you can't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder.

Church exterior Mount Nebo Jordan

Inside the Memorial church of Moses.

One of the main attractions at Mount Nebo is the Memorial Church of Moses which is also known as the Maqam Nabi Musa. The church is a historical landmark, which was first built in the second half of the 4th century to commemorate the place of Moses' death. It has had renovations many times, since it was increased in size in the late fifth century CE and rebuilt in 597 CE. The most recent renovation took place as recently as 2019.

The church has fascinated explorers since it was rediscovered in the mid 19th century, following its abandonment in the 16th century, and has been an archaeological project since, with a protective shelter being installed over some of the remains.

Today, visitors will only find mosaics that remain from the original church, and they aren’t in the best condition anymore.

You will also find an olive tree next to the church, which was planted by Pope John Paul II in 2000 on his pilgrimage to the holy site.

You will see a picture of Pope John Paul II on his visit to the site & some stone tablets with writings from like 1,500 years ago near the museum.

Is Mount Nebo worth visiting?

My honest opinion.

Every tourist visiting Jordan has their own reasons, and there is no doubt that the religious sites across the Kingdom draws in a large amount of global visitors. It wasn’t on my ‘must-visit’ list when planning my trip, however, it was a nice addition to Day 1 of our private tour along with Madaba, Wadi Mujib and Little Petra.

I wouldn’t say it is a site worth visiting solely, but because it can be tied in with many other close-by highlights, I would recommend adding it to your Jordan itinerary. It certainly gets the mind thinking about biblical times, which is pretty surreal. Hopefully, you get a clear day like we did and get to spot the ‘Promised Land’ like Moses did, along with the Dead Sea and amazing Jordanian Valley.

Jordan isn’t just about the Petra wonder!
