An awesome breakfast at Breaking Bread in Tamarindo.
Finding the best breakfast in Tamarindo is difficult.
As there is so much choice!
The pura vida lifestyle runs deep in the coastal towns along the Pacific coastline, so healthy and tasty breakfasts are abundant.
Breaking Bread in Tamarindo takes the win as my favourite though!
After trying many breakfast options in the mornings, before my action packed itinerary in Tamarindo, I came to the conclusion that its freshly baked goods are irresistible.
If you also throw an awesome theme, friendly owner, bright space, and a loving dog into the mix, then it is no wonder I spent many mornings in Breaking Bread.
If you aren’t sold on the colourful bakery cafe by now, then keep scrolling to see some food options, photos, and my favourite dish.
I have also added some of the other best places to eat in Tamarindo in the morning!
Some great options to fuel your day of fun in Tamarindo.
One thing you will notice when you arrive in Costa Rica, is the abundance of healthy dining options!
Healthy living is a big part of the pura vida lifestyle, and the locals in Tamarindo are very much into the good life.
Breaking Bread cooks its food fresh, and caters for different dietary needs, meaning everyone is welcome.
Although they are not advertised on the menu at Breaking Bread, there are fresh bread, croissants, sweet treats, and beautiful cakes available daily.
In terms of the menu, one of the highlights is the ‘Hiesenberg bowl’, which offers a nutritious and flavourful bowl of fruit and granola. I chose this one day as it goes perfectly with the theme of the cafe, and I would recommend it.
If you are heading to the cafe a bit later in the day, then you can’t go wrong with the sandwiches, as there is a vast array of options, all of which provide plenty of protein and carbs to fuel your busy day in Tamarindo!
A convenient location near the beach.
Breaking Bread is located in the heart of town, at Calle Central, Tamarindo, Costa Rica.
It's just a short walk from the beach and a perfect stop to fuel up before exploring the town
‘Central Ave 120, Guanacaste Province, Tamarindo, Costa Rica’.
Opening Hours:
Everyday: 6:00 AM - 3:00 PM
It’s a nice area that’s ideal for breakfast or brunch while soaking in the local vibe!
I picked a beautiful option.
My sweet tooth got the better of me once again, so I opted for the french toast, and it was amazing!
As you can see below, the french toast is made with thick Challah bread, and comes in very generous portion sizes.
The breakfast dish was crunchy, light and flavourful, and had a sweet caramelised texture.
I would be lying if I said that I finished it all!
I found it to be worth the cost of C5500 (£8.50) that I paid, which isn’t too bad for Costa Rican prices.
The service and owner are awesome.
One common theme I noticed when I visited all of the popular destinations in Costa Rica are the welcoming locals.
Every time that I visited Breaking Bread on my solo trip, I had a chat with the owner, ‘Annette’, while sitting in the bright open air cafe.
She always makes the effort to get to know visitors.
After visiting Breaking Bread several times, I was surprised with a cinnamon bun on the house after one of my meals, which made for a great unexpected snack later in the day.
This gesture sums up the whole vibe of the cafe and the lovely staff!
Another top pick for you to consider.
You won’t go wrong with anything from the menu, as all of the food is cooked fresh by the very talented staff members.
Although I really enjoyed dining in for a meal, taking out some pastries with you is an energy hack for a day on Tamarindo Beach.
The cinnamon buns are beautiful and come in a very large size, which provides plenty of carbohydrates and calories ready for a long day exploring.
They reminded me of the giant cinnamon buns I tried in the cafes in Gothenburg.
All of the products are cooked in house at Breaking Bread to ensure they all meet minimum quality standards, and it shows with the consistency of the sweet treats
My overall experience dining at Breaking Bread.
I headed to Tamarindo after enjoying some beautiful food during my time in La Fortuna, so I wasn’t sure if the rest of my Costa Rica trip could match the small jungle town’s cuisine.
As I explored Tamarindo, I discovered Breaking Bread by chance on my first day, but I am over the moon that I did!
It became a regular occurrence each morning, before I headed to Tamarindo Beach for my walk next to the Pacific Ocean.
I have zero faults with the place, as the food is fresh and beautiful, the staff are lovely, and the dog on site is so friendly!
Breaking Bad is one of my favourite tv series, which definitely helps, alongside the bright space and colourful decor.
I give Breaking Bread a 10/10!
The bakery caters all visitors with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options, so don’t miss your chance of an awesome breakfast!
It was up there with one of the best restaurants on my whole Costa Rica itinerary!
Some Tamarindo cheap eats for breakfast.
The Pura Vida life is prevalent throughout Tamarindo, with most breakfast places offering healthy dishes, along with smoothies, coffees, and some local Tico food.
Here are some popular breakfast spots in Tamarindo to consider as well as Breaking Bread:
Nogui's Restaurant.
An established beach front restaurant is open all day, with plenty of Costa Rican dishes. It is also a nice place to enjoy the Tamarindo sunset.
Waffle Monkey.
Not so much in the way of local cuisine, but waffles to die for, which go well with the surfer vibe throughout the town.
CoffeeHolic Tamarindo.
A mixture of local and international breakfast options at a reasonable cost, with good portion sizes. Within walking distance of the beach.
Mandarina.
Ideal spot for juices, smoothies, and coffees to go. Food and seating is also available.
In terms of prices in Costa Rica, if you want to save money, then look for a Soda restaurant. I got the best deals in the traditional small restaurants in Tamarindo, La Fortuna, and during my time in San Jose.
Visiting Tamarindo and looking for some activities?
Tamarindo is one of my favourite places to visit in Costa Rica as it is abundant with fun activities.
Here are a few for you to consider:
Surfing on the Pacific is one of the biggest draws to Costa Rica, and Tamarindo has one of the best reputations for the fun sport, especially for beginners.
I loved my surf lesson!
If you want to spot some crocodiles, or learn about the local landscape, then taking the Tamarindo estuary tour is your best option.
We spent two hours touring the estuary and spotting wildlife in its natural habitat. The tour guides make the activity special with their expert knowledge and great instincts for spotting the reptiles.
I visited Tamarindo in one of Costa Rica’s quieter months, but it was still busy and full of fun, so don’t let anytime of year put you off visiting, especially if you love Pacific sunsets.
The Tamarindo sunset is Instagram worthy all year round!
